The Labor Department said jobless claims fell to 297,000 from the previous week`s revised figure of 306,000. Economists had expected jobless claims to rise to 315,000 from the 305,000 originally reported for the previous week.
The report also showed that the less volatile four-week moving average fell to 317,250 from the previous week`s unrevised average of 328,750.
At the same time, the Labor Department said that continuing claims in the week ended April 28 rose to 2.555 million from the preceding week`s revised level of 2.49 million.
